Cancer de l’ovaire Canada est heureux d’annoncer que le Prix de l’espoir Peggy Truscott est remis cette année à titre posthume à Barbara Lepitzki de Cudworth, en Saskatchewan.
Ce prix a été créé en 2003 en mémoire de Peggy Truscott, une personne formidable dont l’engagement et le travail auprès de Cancer de l’ovaire Canada ont permis de léguer un héritage précieux à tous ceux qui œuvrent dans le domaine du cancer de l’ovaire. Ce prix a été conçu pour souligner le dévouement d’une personne ou d’un groupe de bénévoles pour appuyer la mission de Cancer de l’ovaire Canada.
Barbara est une candidate exemplaire qui mérite tout à fait cet honneur. Depuis 2005, elle a joué un rôle très actif sur la scène canadienne du cancer de l’ovaire, en particulier pour établir la présence de Cancer de l’ovaire Canada en Saskatchewan. Barbara a mis sur pied un groupe de soutien mensuel pour les femmes de Saskatoon et des environs. Avec son groupe, elle s’est investie dans les activités de Cancer de l’ovaire Canada et a commencé à animer des séances des programmes « Les survivantes, source d’apprentissage pour les étudiants » et « Comment relever le défi d’une maladie sournoise ».
Barbara a également joué un rôle clé dans l’organisation de la Randonnée de l’espoir Winners à Saskatoon, dont elle a été la coprésidente.
Son travail de défense des intérêts des patientes visait également à sensibiliser la population de la Saskatchewan et à améliorer les soins de santé dans la province. Avec l’appui des autres membres de son groupe, elle a organisé des rencontres avec le conseil de la santé de Saskatoon et le ministre de la Santé de la Saskatchewan en 2008.
Le groupe qui l’a mise en candidature a décrit Barbara de la façon suivante : « une mère de trois garçons pleine de compassion, généreuse, intelligente », « Barbara avait le cœur aussi grand et rayonnant qu’un arc-en-ciel », « elle faisait toujours passer les autres d’abord, elle aidait ceux qu’elle pouvait aider et défendait ceux qu’elle ne pouvait pas aider ».
En plus de son dévouement envers la mission de Cancer de l’ovaire Canada, Barbara était également bénévole pour le programme « Cancer Connection/Cancer j’écoute » de la Société canadienne du cancer, un service de soutien téléphonique personnalisé dans le cadre duquel Barbara partageait son vécu avec d’autres femmes atteintes du cancer de l’ovaire et appuyait celles qui venaient de recevoir un nouveau diagnostic.
Depuis 2005, Barbara Lepitzki a réalisé plusieurs projets importants pour faire progresser la cause du cancer de l’ovaire en Saskatchewan et au Canada, tout en élevant trois jeunes hommes remarquables « qui sont devenus forts, responsables, sensibles et à l’écoute du désir de leur mère d’appuyer les autres, de se battre pour une cause à laquelle elle croyait et de communiquer pour sensibiliser les gens ».
Nous aimerions reconnaître les autres personnes mises en candidature pour le Prix de l’espoir Peggy Truscott 2009 et souligner les réalisations exceptionnelles de tous ces bénévoles! Nous avons reçu en tout six candidatures, soit :

Ovarian Cancer Canada is delighted to announce that this year the Peggy Truscott Award of Hope is awarded, posthumously, to Barbara Lepitzki of Cudworth, Saskatchewan.
The Award was established in 2003 in memory of Peggy Truscott, an incredible person whose commitment to and involvement with Ovarian Cancer Canada created a legacy within the ovarian cancer community. This award was designed to celebrate the dedication of an individual or group who volunteers in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada’s mission.
Barbara is an exemplary candidate and very worthy of this dedication. Since 2005 she has played a very active role in the Canadian ovarian cancer scene, particularly in her efforts to establish a presence for Ovarian Cancer Canada in Saskatchewan. Barbara organized a monthly support group for the women of Saskatoon and surrounding area. She and the group then became involved with the programs at Ovarian Cancer Canada and began delivering Survivors Teaching Students and Listen to the Whispers.
Barbara was also instrumental in bringing the Winners Walk of Hope to Saskatoon and was co-chair of the walk.
She was also dedicated to bringing awareness and change to health care in Saskatchewan and did this through her advocacy work. Supported by others in the support group she organized a meeting with the Saskatoon Board of Health and the Saskatchewan Minister of Health in 2008.
Barbara has been described by her nomination team as “a compassionate, generous, intelligent mother of three boys”, “Barbara had a heart that was a big and as bright as a rainbow”, “she put others first-she helped who she could and advocated for those she could not”.
In addition to her dedication to Ovarian Cancer Canada’s mission, Barbara was also a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society’s “Cancer Connection/Cancer j’ecoute” a one-on-one telephone support service where Barbara shared her story with women with ovarian cancer supported women telling their stories of a new diagnosis.
Barbara Lepitzki has accomplished many wonderful things since 2005 to advance the cause of ovarian cancer in Saskatchewan and Canada all while raising three incredible young men who have “grown up strong, responsible, supportive and aware of their mother’s quest to support other people, to fight for a cause you believe in and to communicate to spread awareness.
